Your dust collector grabs the chips. The fine dust that hangs in the air after you sand or cut is the stuff you breathe in. A ceiling-hung air filter cleans that up.
How to size one
Figure your shop’s volume: length × width × ceiling height, in cubic feet. For a good shop, you want the air filter to move that whole volume several times an hour. A two-car garage is about 20 × 20 × 9 = 3,600 cubic feet, so a 780 to 1,050 CFM unit cycles the air many times an hour.
| Shop size | Look at |
|---|---|
| 1-car garage or corner shop | 780 CFM |
| 2-car garage | 1,050 CFM |
| Large or tall shop | 1,350 CFM |

- Hang it near where you sand and cut, about head height to the ceiling.
- Let it run 20–30 minutes after you stop working. That’s when the fine dust is still hanging.
- Check and change the filters on schedule. A clogged filter moves a fraction of its rated air.
- It’s not a respirator. Wear a mask while you’re making dust.
