Aging-in-Place Bathroom Upgrades: A Contractor’s Checklist

The bathroom is one of the most common places for falls at home. A few targeted upgrades let people stay in their own home longer and safer, often without a full remodel.

The upgrades that matter most

  1. A step-free shower. Replace the tub or tall curb with a curbless or low-threshold base. Curbless shower bases.
  2. A taller toilet. A 17–19″ seat is far easier to use. Comfort height toilets.
  3. Grab bars, anchored into studs or blocking. Never on drywall anchors alone.
  4. A sit-at vanity. Open space underneath for a stool or wheelchair. ADA vanities.
  5. Better light. A lighted mirror cabinet puts light on faces, not just the ceiling. Lighted medicine cabinets.
  6. A non-slip floor and lever handles on faucets and doors.
  7. A wider door if a walker or wheelchair is in the picture.

Products we’d start with

SLYDO Single Threshold Shower Base

A low curb on one side. The easiest base to install on an existing slab when you can’t recess the floor.

Do it in stages

You don’t have to do everything at once. A taller toilet and grab bars can go in within a day. The shower conversion is the bigger job and the biggest safety win. We help Brevard families plan these upgrades around budget and timing.
