Curbless Shower Bases: What to Know Before You Buy

A curbless (zero-threshold) shower has no step to trip over. It looks great and it’s the safest shower you can build, but the floor underneath has to be planned for it.

Curbless vs low-threshold

A true curbless base sits flush with the bathroom floor, so the floor under the shower has to be lower than the rest of the room. On a wood-framed floor we lower the framing. On a concrete slab, which is most homes in Florida, that usually means cutting and recessing the concrete under the shower, or raising the rest of the bathroom floor to meet it.

If that’s more work than you want, a single-threshold base with a low curb gets you most of the way: an easy step-in shower without touching the slab.

Our picks

Don’t skip the waterproofing. With no curb to hold water back, the bathroom floor outside the shower needs to be waterproofed and sloped right too. Pair the base with a glass panel or door. See our frameless shower door guide.
